A hospitalist is a medical provider who specializes in caring for hospitalized patients. Unlike primary care providers who see patients in clinics or offices, hospitalists focus exclusively on patients who are staying in the hospital. Because they spend their shifts in the hospital, they are readily available to respond quickly to patient needs, review test results, communicate with nurses, and answer questions from patients and families.
