Lucas County Health Center (LCHC) is excited to announce the addition of a new tool designed to make lab visits more comfortable for patients—especially children. The hospital’s laboratory has recently introduced the Buzzy Bee, a small device that uses vibration and cold therapy to help reduce pain and anxiety during blood draws and other needle procedures.
The Buzzy Bee works by gently vibrating and cooling the area near the injection site, which helps distract the nervous system and minimize discomfort. This simple but effective approach can make a significant difference for patients who feel anxious about needles, have had difficult lab experiences in the past, or require frequent blood tests.
“This is a small device that can make a big impact,” said Denise Smith, Laboratory Manager. “Our goal is always to provide compassionate, patient-centered care. The Buzzy Bee gives us another way to help patients, especially kids, feel more comfortable and confident during their visit.”
The addition of the Buzzy Bee reflects LCHC’s ongoing commitment to improving the patient experience and reducing barriers to care. For many families, fear of needles can lead to delayed testing or added stress during medical visits. By offering this tool, the laboratory team hopes to create a more positive and supportive environment for patients of all ages.
While the Buzzy Bee is particularly helpful for pediatric patients, it can also benefit adults who experience anxiety, sensitivity to pain, or difficulty with blood draws.
“We are always looking for ways to make healthcare more comfortable and less intimidating,” said Jay Christensen, Chief Executive Officer. “I commend our team for going above and beyond to find ways to improve our patient experience. Sometimes the small changes can have the biggest impact.”
Patients and families who are interested in using the Buzzy Bee during a lab visit are encouraged to simply ask a member of the laboratory team.
